Facing Your Fears

Description

A multifamily cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) group for verbally fluent children and adolescents ages 8-14 with autism spectrum disorder who need assistance managing anxiety that interferes with their daily lives. This is a 12 or 14 week group that uses CBT principles to assist youth and their parents/caregivers in identifying their anxiety, worry and/or fears, as well as learning strategies to manage their anxiety symptoms. The group gives youth an opportunity to practice “facing your fears” with their parents/caregivers with guidance and support and group facilitators.

Basic Eligibility

• Children 8-14 years old
• Autism and anxiety
• Verbally fluent
• Youth and parent(s) able to participate together

Family Navigator

Padres Para Padres

Description

Padres para Padres is an ongoing parent support group that is conducted entirely in Spanish. It is an opportunity for parents of children with disabilities to share their thoughts and feelings in a supportive and confidential environment. Meetings are the first Tuesday of each month from 6-8 p.m. at the UC Davis MIND Institute or Zoom. To register, please call 916-734-1812. Sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.

Research Studies

Description

The MIND Institute conducts collaborative multidisciplinary research on neurodevelopmental disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. Our new Research Participant Registry (RPR) is designed to match potential participants with the MIND Institute’s human research studies.

Description

Online and in-person resources relating to neurodevelopmental disabilities and other conditions. Provides parent-to-parent support and create and support connections to resources within the MIND Institute, the UC Davis Medical Center, and in the community. Sibling Group Virtual Sessions

Description

The group is designed to provide a social, expressive outlet for siblings (ages 7-13 years) of individuals with developmental disabilities or chronic health issues. This program will be led by our two Certified Child Life Specialists.

This FREE program will focus on providing a safe space to interact, have fun, and engage with our siblings in conversation, activities, crafts, and play. To meet the needs of this unique program. It is currently offered to typically developing siblings only.

Social Skills Program

Description

Covers important practical issues involved in helping groups of children learn new skills and techniques for peer interaction. Each session includes practice working and navigating peer relationships in large and small group, and team problem solving. The parent group reviews the day’s curriculum as well as other topics such as diagnostic profiles, psychiatric comorbidities, treatment, and working with school districts.

Basic Eligibility

• 8-17 years old
• Diagnosis of autism or clinically significantly social communication difficulties
• Ability to communicate in full sentences and have brief conversations with others
